HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Flags will be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Friday in honor of Astronaut Neil Armstrong in accordance with a proclamation from President Barack Obama.
Armstrong was the first man to ever walk on the moon after the lunar landing of the Apollo 11 in 1969. He also received the following awards:
- Presidential Medal of Freedom
- Congressional Space Medal of Honor
- Congressional Gold Medal
Gov. Dannel P. Malloy said that Armstrong left "an extraordinary legacy of service" to the United States and its citizens.
"Beginning with his duty in the Navy and culminating with his post-space flight work in higher education, he was committed to American progress," Malloy said in a statement Thursday. "We stand with his family and friends in mourning the loss of an American hero."
