Parents, students upset about new bus schedule in North Haven

NORTH HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A scheduling change has middle and high school students in North Haven riding the bus together his school year. However, some parents and students are petitioning to change the schedule back and are worried about the effect of having the two age groups riding the bus together.

The M and J Bus Company changed the pickup schedule so the secondary students ride the bus together. Elementary students ride the bus at a separate time.

"From the kids' perspective it doesn't work," said parent Molly McKenna. "You have to look at it in all different ways"

Under the previous system, buses had to drop off high school student a half hour early in order to pick up middle school students on time. This difference meant that the staff at the high school had to be at work early to supervise the students.

Parents are trying to start a petition to get the schedule changed because students used the half hour before classes to complete homework or meet with teachers.

Parents are also worried about the two different age groups interacting on the bus.

"As a parent it's a concern. I have a sixth grader and a high schooler and I know there's things my high schooler talks about that I don't want my sixth grader (laughing) overhearing," said parent John Casamento. "So it is definitely a concern."

On Wednesday, there were not enough seats for all the students on the first day of school and some had to sit on the floor of the bus.
