EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

8-year-old Elijah Montalvan has died after he was hit by a vehicle while he was riding his bike late Thursday night.

East Hartford police said they responded to reports of the Elijah being hit around 11:30 p.m. in the area of 160 Plain Drive.

The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 52-year-old East Hartford resident Paul Gronda.

According to unnamed sources, it appeared as though the child darted out into the path of the car and was then hit.

After that, those sources said, eyewitnesses to the crash pulled the driver from the vehicle and beat him up.

"The car was speeding through this corner he was speeding by and all of a sudden. Boom," said Jose Gonzalez, who witnessed the incident. "We looked at him and we just started running."

Police said the boy was brought to Connecticut Children's Medical Center to be treated. Sources told Eyewitness News he suffered brain injuries.

The East Hartford Police Department Accident Reconstruction Teams has been conducting an investigation into the incident, and as a result the unidentified driver has been charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended licence and failure to have any car insurance

Police said more charges may be forthcoming, pending the outcome of the investigation.
