Riverfront Recapture
EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The Connecticut River in East Hartford will once again come alive with the roar of engines and the spray of rooster tails as Riverfront Recapture hosts the U.S. Title Series Powerboat Race this weekend.
During the weekend's action, people in attendance will be treated to competition between national champions and speed record holders in every class that will be run.
Returning this year are winners from the 2010 race including Connecticut's Mike Schmidt and New York's Jim Wright.
Many of the races will reach speeds of 100 mph, and the fastest will reach 120 mph.
"There is no thrill more exciting than seeing the blur of boats thundering across the surface of the water into their first turn," said Charlie Myers, director of events and programs. "With youth competitors starting at age 11 in their K-PRO Hydro boats, to veteran drivers, the Riverfront US Title Series Power Boat Race promises to offer something for everyone."
Race viewing is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. from the banks of the river at East Hartford's Great River. The competition will be divided into classes that range from 125cc up to 1100cc engines.
Myers also said that the local economy will get a late summer boost because teams and fans traveling from all over the country are staying in local hotels, eating locally and are experiencing other attractions in Hartford and East Hartford.
