MESA, AZ (CBS5) -
A man, arrested for allegedly attacking a Mesa police officer, died Monday while exercising in the Fourth Avenue Jail.
The Maricopa County Sheriff's Office said Tai Matangi, 37, collapsed in the recreation yard of the jail about 4 p.m. Monday while exercising with other inmates. He was taken to St. Luke's Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
MCSO said the security tapes show no sign of an altercation. Authorities are investigating how he died.
Matangi was arrested on May 30 for loitering outside a Circle K in Mesa.
Mesa police said Matangi pushed an officer after he was confronted and accused of stealing beer. The fight was caught on camera.
Police used a baton and a Taser to try to bring him down, but Matangi pulled the wires of the Taser off him and kept coming at the officer.
