HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
A man who tried to break into a Hartford apartment became startled by residents and ran away from the scene Wednesday afternoon.
Hartford police were called to an apartment building on Capen Street around 1 p.m. for a man who had broken into a first-floor unit. According to police, the man cut a hole through the screen window to gain access to the home.
However, the would-be burglar "got lucky," according to one resident because waiting for him down the hall was a woman with a wooden stick.
"I walked down the hall to my son's room, and there was a black male on his bed coming through the window," said a neighbor. "I screamed there's a man that's broken into the house, and went and got a weapon, by the time I got back to my son's room he was headed out the window."
No arrests have been made at this time, but police are identifying the suspect as David Williams, 41, of Hartford. Police said he left his cellphone and a knife in the apartment after being startled by residents.
Williams has several previous arrests for narcotics and weapons crimes.
It is unclear if the suspect took anything from the apartment. Neighbors said Wednesday's incident was the second burglary at the building this week.
