WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

A New Britain man has been arrested after trying to enter the VA Hospital in West Haven with a loaded gun by identifying himself as law enforcement officer.

The West Haven Police Department arrested Gordon Brooks, 34, and charged him with criminal impersonation of a police officer, criminal possession of a firearm, carrying without a permit and breach of peace.

Police said Brooks entered the VA Hospital saying he had an appointment with an unnamed doctor on Wednesday afternoon.

Standard protocol is that any law enforcement agent needs to turn their weapon in to the VA Police for security reasons, along with identification.

Police said Brooks showed officers a loaded gun along with an ID and badge that said he was a criminal investigator with the United States Army.

An officer said he became suspicious of the ID because there were no credentials to go along with it. He further investigated the ID along with a Connecticut pistol permit check and found Brooks had neither one.

The search also showed Brooks had numerous felony and misdemeanor charges out of Florida and Virginia.

Brooks was arrested and is being held on $50,000 bond.
