RIDGEFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Police have found the body of a missing runner, 44-year-old David Riek and the medical examiner has confirmed that the cause of the death is suicide.

The body was found in a rocky area in one of the open space areas off of Florida Hill Road.

A spokesman for the runner's family told Eyewitness News that officials suspended the search Sunday afternoon.

Friends said Riek, of Ridgefield, went out for a run at about 7 a.m. Saturday but never returned home.

Family members told Eyewitness News that Riek is a long distance runner and usually returns from a run about two hours later. Riek's wife became concerned after nasty storms moved through the area and her husband was still not home. She then called police, who began searching for the missing runner.

Ridgefield police searched for Riek in a 10-mile radius area where he may have been running. The search was set to resume at 9 a.m. Sunday but was called off early in the afternoon.

Riek has lived in Ridgefield for eight years. He and his wife have three children, and they have lived in their current home for six years. According to family members, Riek works at an insurance company in New York City and has family in Long Island.
