Wesleyan student due in court on voyeurism charges

A Wesleyan student is due in court Tuesday to answer to charges of voyeurism after police said he took photos of a female student in a dormitory shower.

The student was arrested and charged with voyeurism Monday morning after police said he was using a cell phone to take pictures of a woman.

An unidentified woman reported to police that while she was taking a shower a man entered the stall next to her in the co-ed bathroom.

She said the water in the stall next to her shut off and then, she noticed a hand with a camera phone reach underneath the stall. The victim told police that she believed the man had taken a photo of her.

She yelled at the man "Excuse me! What are you doing?" and the man, who police identified as Robert Rotaru, 19, of Higganum, said "I'm sorry" before leaving the room.

The victim noticed a striped bath robe in the bathroom and told friends to look for someone wearing the clothing item.

Rotaru, who is from Romania, admitted to the crime when questioned by police and told them that he took four photos of the unidentified woman.

"I have to say I am really surprised by that," said Siqi Zhao, who is a sophomore at Wesleyan. "I don't know what to say."

Police said the arrest is an isolated incident and there is no evidence that something similar occurred anywhere else on campus. Rotaru has been removed from campus since the incident.

"He could live down the road with no access to the dorms," said Stewart Pash, who is a junior at Wesleyan.

Rotaru, who has no criminal history, was charged with disorderly conduct and voyeuristic recording of another person. He was released on $10,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Middletown Wednesday morning.
