Fairfield County firefighters remember trip to ground zero

FAIRFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Eleven years ago, a group of Fairfield County firefighters traveled to ground zero following the 9/11 terrorist attacks to help in any way that they could. On Tuesday, Eyewitness News caught up with one of the firefighters as he described what he witnessed on his trip to ground zero.

"We had no idea how we were going to get down there," said Lt. Lee Corbo Tuesday afternoon.

Eyewitness News caught up with the firefighters two days after the terrorist attacks as they prepared to board a train headed toward the devastation.

"We just happened to bump into Kara (Sundlun) and her cameraman on the train platform and she kinda tagged along with us," Corbo said about the accidental meeting almost 11 years ago.

The firefighters went on their own time into the dangerous area to help. Some were looking for a firefighter who left their department to work for the New York Fire Department.

The former Bridgeport firefighter died alongside his fellow members of the New York Fire Department.

One of the special moments of the trip was when a priest took time to bless the firefighters.

"That was something I'll never forget," Corbo said. "It made us feel good that he was looking out for us."

Even with all the devastation around him, Corbo remembers all the signs of hope such as a New York City firefighter working a hose.

"He was rinsing all the dust off a tree and the sidewalk and here's a guy surrounded by mayhem, but he's trying to take care of his little world and I knew everything was OK because of that," he said.
