MANSFIELD, CT (WFSB) -

Two schools in Mansfield were placed on lockdown Wednesday morning after Connecticut State Police attempted to arrest a suspect wanted for a home invasion.

Connecticut State Police said Anibal Carrero Jr., 40, was one of five masked men who broke into a home on Derek Road on Sept. 4. When they entered the house, the men tied up two people while holding them up at gunpoint.

According to state police, troopers were attempting to serve Carrero with a warrant at his home at 281 Coventry Rd. Wednesday morning. When Carrero noticed a surveillance vehicle from previous incidents, he fled from police on foot.

State police said troopers, along with a K-9 unit and a fixed wing aircraft began to search for Carrero, and around 9:30 a.m., Mansfield Middle School and the Annie Vinton School were both locked down as a precaution.

Troopers were able to locate Carrero in a wooded area about three miles from his house and he was taken into custody without incident.

Carrero was charged with armed robbery, first-degree burglary, first-degree robbery, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree making a false statement. He is being held on a $75,000 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in Superior Court in Rockville on Thursday.

The lockdown at the schools was lifted around 11 a.m.

State police said more arrests are expected in the home invasion case.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call state police at 860-896-3200 or 860-896-3237.
