NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
A restaurant known as the "modern day 'roadside' burger stand" opened its second location in Connecticut this week.
There was a line out of the door and down Chapel Street in New Haven for people waiting to get their hands on the cheeseburgers and hot dogs at Shake Shack.
"We're taking a classic hamburger and giving our own modern spin on it," said Mark Rosati, who is the culinary manager at Shake Shack. "We also serve crinkle cut french fries and killer frozen custard, which is a fresh ice cream we make here fresh, every day."
The New Haven location is the franchise's second establishment in Connecticut with other being located in Westport. However, Shake Shack is well-known in New York.
"It comes down to being part of the community. Every Shake Shack we open, we design and craft the menu to reflect the community we're coming into," Rosati said. "We never want to be cookie cutter. We want to do something unique so when people come here they say it's a local that opened up a restaurant for the neighborhood."
Some of the menu items reflect that "neighborhood" feel.
"For the first time, we have a new hot dog and its called the handsome dog. It's named after our neighbor across the street, Handsome Dan, the bulldog mascot at Yale," Rosati said. "It's a grilled hot dog made with our own cheese sauce and deep fried shallots."
