CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
The FBI is now conducting an investigation into a bizarre case involving a woman who tried to rob a Canton bank Friday morning claiming to have a bomb strapped to her back.
Police were called to a robbery at the bank shortly before 10 a.m. Friday.
Officers handcuffed the woman who was still in the bank, at which time she told them she had a bomb strapped to her back.
Officers then cleared everyone out of the bank. A perimeter was set up. "When there's an explosive device everybody's at risk including law enforcement any first responders. We evacuated the area and were safe at all times," said Randy Tucker, Madison County Sheriff.
Officers talked to the woman through the open bank doors for more than an hour, appearing to calm her down, while she paced the lobby.
Around 11:30 a.m. a man dressed in a bomb disposal suit entered the bank, and freed the woman of the cuffs, and the backpack with the device.
While she was being treated by paramedics, the device was detonated in a trailer. Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker says they're not sure if the device was a bomb.
Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker says, "The female that was in the bank with the device has been transported to the hospital. We don't know if she was a victim or at tool used in this process."
They're also investigating whether the woman had the device put on her and was used as a pawn to rob the bank.
