STAMFORD, CT (AP/WFSB) -
Stamford Police Chief Robert Nivakoff is retiring after three years as chief, and four decades in the force.
Nivakoff, 60, said the decision was partially based on health issues.
Assistant chief John Fontneau will take over many of Nivakoff's duties until a successor is named.
Nivakoff is credited with bringing the SWAT team, a bomb squad, and hostage negotiation skills to the Stamford police department.
Nivakoff will step down at the end of September.
