Middletown police arrested a registered sex offender Wednesday after he was accused of exposing himself and then masturbating in front of a 14-year-old girl on a city bus.
Joseph Mayberry was riding the Middletown Area Transit Bus when he started performing a sexual act on the bus, police said. The incident was in front of the child and caught by the bus' camera.
Mayberry has 28 convictions including ones for sexual assault, burglary and assaulting a public safety officer among other crimes, and he is list on the State of Connecticut Sex Offender's Registry, police said.
The girl told police that she was headed home Tuesday around 8:30 p.m. when Mayberry sat across from her. He started to massage his genitals through his pants for several minutes, the girl told police.
Mayberry, who is a convicted rapist, would eventually expose himself to the girl twice and touch his genitals both times, the 14-year-old told police.
The girl was scared by Mayberry's actions and told police how they "make her feel uncomfortable."
"It's sad, it's really sad," said Jim Jones of Middletown. "They should lock him up."
Police attempted to locate Mayberry at 30 Erin St., which is the address listed on the State of Connecticut Sex Offender's Registry. However, Mayberry was not at the location.
His brother told police that Mayberry had moved out three weeks ago because he was "not acting right" and "embarrassing the family."
Police located Mayberry at 400 Washington St. where he was living with a cousin. While being handcuffed, he attempted to resist, police said.
People who normally ride the bus said they were horrified to learn about the incident involving Mayberry, who is a regular bus rider.
"If he's doing it in front of children then, he's not got a conscious to his surroundings," said Kurt Wright, bus rider.
Bus rider Gina Bernardi said Mayberry should not be allowed to ride the bus.
"He should find his way, bicycle or walk," she said. "But, don't be doing that in front of children"
Mayberry was charged with risk of injury to child, interfering with an officer simple assault breach of peace, distribute sex explicit material, public indecency and failure to register sexually violent offense.
He is being held on $250,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Middletown on Oct. 2.
Eyewitness News reached out to the bus company, however they have not responded at this time.
