Police: Accused 'Supermarket Stalker' may be linked to similar crimes

A New Britain man accused of stalking and robbing an elderly woman has been charged with a similar crime in Berlin.

According to police, an 82-year-old woman had returned to her Pine Lane home in Wethersfield after shopping at the Stop and Shop in Rocky Hill just before 11 a.m. on June 22. As she was getting out of her vehicle, the woman was robbed in her garage at gunpoint by Eugene Edwards, 50, police said.

Police believe Edwards followed the woman home from the Stop and Shop.

According to court documents obtained by Eyewitness News, Edwards was arrested for first-degree robbery in New York. He spent 13 years in prison for crime.

Prior to his arrest, Edwards lived in New Britain.

Residents were worried for months if police were going to catch "the Supermarket Stalker" who targeted elderly women leaving the grocery store.

"I've seen security here ever since that happened," said Barbara Gorman of Wethersfield. "Ever since that happened I've always looked in my rear view mirror before I pulled into my driveway."

The incident caused Stop and Shop to increase their security and advised shoppers to be aware of their surroundings.

Police said surveillance video identified a Chrysler 300 as the suspect's car and believed it belonged to Edwards.

Edwards covered up scuff marks on the Chrysler 300 and took the front license plates, police said.

Officers used Edwards' cell phone records and pictures from license plate readers on Newington police cruisers to arrest him on Wednesday.

A similar robbery in New Britain remains under investigation by police and Edwards remains a suspect in that case.

Court documents indicate that Edwards tried to rob a 69-year-old woman in Plainville, but he took off after following her home.

Edwards is currently being held on $500,000 bond.
