Two men killed after shooting in Hartford

Hartford police are asking for the public's help finding suspects in a double fatal shooting that occurred early Monday morning.

According to police, two men were found inside of a Toyota SUV, suffering from gunshot wounds, on South Whitney Street near the Capitol Avenue intersection just after midnight.

It appears that the SUV was still moving when the two men were shot, police said. The SUV would eventually crash into a utility pole.

Police identified the two men as Esmerito Perez-Mendez, 61, and Ramon Perez, 23, both of Hartford. Each man was shot once and were transported to St. Francis Hospital, where they died, police said.

Police are now searching for witnesses to the crime. Officers are also checking to see if any nearby apartments or businesses have surveillance cameras facing the street.

"I stay in my house after dark. I got pit bulls," said Julio Padro, who lives near the crash. "You can come to my house. You knock on my house. You're welcome to come in, but if you come in brutal, you're not gonna check out."

Residents were surprised to learned about two people killed in that section of the capital city.

"Especially in this area of Hartford, usually this is the quiet side," said Tammy Tibbs of Hartford.

Anyone with any information of the double fatal shooting is asked to call 860-757-4089. or the tip line at 860-722-TIPS (8477). All tips will be kept confidential.
