NEW MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -
The New Milford Police Department is searching for the person responsible for shooting a man walking along Route 7 early Wednesday morning.
New Milford police said they received reports of a 29-year-old man that was shot in the shoulder around 1 a.m. The unidentified victim was taken to Danbury Hospital where he is in stable condition.
"I've never had an experience like this when somebody's been shot in the middle of the night," said Kris Stewart of New Milford.
The shooter fled after the incident, prompting the New Milford Police Department to launch a massive manhunt for the shooter they said was considered to be armed and dangerous. Police searched a mile stretch of Route 7 for several hours with K-9s, a helicopter and SWAT teams.
"I guess, I just hope that I don't find somebody running around in my yard," said Greg Reiske of New Milford.
As a precaution, police said, two hotels in the area were evacuated, and no one is allowed in or out of the area.
"I'm very concerned. If they closed the road down and they are looking and keeping people in their homes, it would have been nice if they could have told us what they looked like, who are they looking for," Stewart said. "That information should have been out right away."
Police have not released a description of the suspect at this time.
Connecticut State Police are assisting in the search for the shooter.
