WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

West Hartford police located a 5-year-old child who wandered from his home after being left alone by his father Wednesday afternoon.

Drivers saw the child crying alone on Tunxis Road around 1:45 p.m. A good Samaritan walked the child about an eighth of a mile back to his home at 334 Tunxis Rd. According to police, the child was home alone.

"Not at 5 years old, that's too young, he can't handle that. It's very irresponsible," said Linda Riccil of West Hartford when asked if the child should be left home alone.

The father, Gbolagade Adetola, returned home about an hour and 15 minutes later with two more children. He told police that he left to pick up his youngest son from a school program after the middle child refused to come with him.

Adetola, 44, was arrested and charged with risk of injury to a minor. He was released on $5,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in Superior Court in Hartford on Oct. 4.

Police were unable to get contact of the mother. Officers are waiting for the mother and the Department of Children and Family to arrive at the home.

The man is Nigerian and police believe that there could be some cultural differences involved in the situation.
