Excellent show, my husband Richard is presently at your hospital in waiting for a heart as well. Praying for an outcome just like Colby's

8:02

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Brigitte (and Richard!)- we are all thinking of you both! It's so important for more people to be registered donors...to help people like your husband.

8:04

Comment From Brigitte Amigron

Thank you, I am hoping lots of people watched the show and sign on as being organ donors, it is difficult to lose a life, it is rewarding to save one

8:04

LifeChoice Donor Services:

I hope so, too, Brigitte. It's so easy to make your decision to be a donor known on www.DonateLifeEngland.org.

8:04

Comment From penelope

wonderful show but just wish that your final scene on the bike had shown Colby wearing a helmet!

8:05

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, Penelope!

8:05

Comment From Ann K

What conditions prevent eligibility as an organ donor?

8:08

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Ann K, There are not many things that absolutely rule people out for donation. There is no age criteria and many diseases and illnesses do not prevent people from being a donor.

8:09

Comment From Brigitte Amigron

Last question, is there a support group out there, I sure could use some support mentally

8:12

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Brigitte, Hartford Hospital has some great support groups for transplant candidates and recipients. You can contact Lynn O'Bara 860-545-1212. I'm sitting next to a heart recipient named Lauren who works at Hartford and would be happy to talk to you! Her email is lmaston@harthosp.org. You can also check out Mended Hearts.

8:12

Comment From Ann K

what about cancer & blood clots?

8:14

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Ann K, cancer is not an absolute rule-out for donation. It depends on whether or not a person is in remission, what kind of cancer, etc. Blood clots are not a rule-out for donation.

Comment From Dave

I, too, needed a heart transplant due to amyloidosis. I had mine in Boston. Without the transplant I would not have lived long. This show has been very emotional for me....I could relate to so many of Colby's situations.

8:15

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Dave, thanks for sharing. How long ago was your heart transplant. Glad you enjoyed the show. It is powerful to have that kind of shared experience.

8:15

Comment From Guest

Ive always wanted too but been real scared..Been always told they dont save organ donors

8:19

LifeChoice Donor Services:

That is most popular myth out there that prevents people from registering...and it is absolutely not true. The healthcare team's priority is always to save their patient's life. The organ procurement organization and transplant team are not involved until after death.

Thanks guys for letting me see the other side of my wife's job. She'll be crying when she see's this. Think I was. Colby's such a awesome kid.

8:20

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, LifeChoice Family Member.

8:20

Comment From Mary

Awesome program. Coincidentally, LifeChoice provided an educational inservice in the Operating Room where I work as a nurse. Tremendously informative. I cannot say enough about the staff from LifeChoice I have had the privilege to work with, and learn from over the years. Keep up the great work, you literally are enriching lives every day!!

8:22

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, Mary! We work with a great team of dedicated staff at LifeChoice. We meet such wonderful people, like donor families and transplant recipients, that make it easy to come to work each day.

8:22

Comment From Ann K

Good. Thank you.

8:22

Comment From Jane

Great show! Colby has done more for promoting awareness about donation than any other resource. Thank you Colby, Channel 3, HH staff, LCDS staff. These stories should be on all networks instead of political bantering.

8:23

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, Jane. Colby has inspired so many people to donate!

8:23

Comment From Nicola

I'm listed as an organ donor through CT DMV. Is that enough?

8:23

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Nicola, you are all set! If you have the heart on your license, then you are registered. Thank you!

8:24

Comment From Lily

I just watched this most inspiring story and I hope it will inspire people to become organ donors. My husband and I watched together and he asked how does he become an organ donor? I wish more people would feel the same and educate themselves about being an organ donor. This young man is quite courageous and I am sure he can be a spokesperson for Organ Donors.

8:25

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Lily, it's easy to register--you can sign up online at www.DonateLifeNewEngland.org. So glad that you both have been inspired by the program.

8:26

Comment From Lifechoice Family Member

To Guest. As a critical care nurse for over 20 yrs. I can promise you we work our butts off to save a patient without even knowing if you are a donor or not. We have no idea.

8:26

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, LifeChoice Family Member. You said it best!

8:28

Comment From Dave

My transplant took place in 2010....I saw the part of the story where Colby's high school friends mom shared her story as a donor family member.....I'm watching the show again right now with my family. I'd like to know more about Colby's company. Where can I get more info and speak to Colby?

8:31

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Hi Dave, you can email me at cbernabucci@lifechoiceopo.org and I will find out the name of Colby's organization that is working to raise awareness about donation (I have the brochure on my desk!!!). You can also check out his blog for more info (Tales from the 10th Floor).

8:31

Comment From Dave

By the way....biopies are a pain in the neck but the results are welcome each time

8:32

LifeChoice Donor Services:

I bet biopsies are tough, Dave. You recipients are tough...and take such good care of the precious gift you received by keeping up with all of your tests.

8:34

Comment From Guest

what an amazing and powerful story.... I was in tears.

8:35

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Channel 3 and Hartford Hospital did a great job capturing the power of organ donation.

8:37

Comment From Tracey

What a beautiful story - thanks to colby for sharing it with the world! My brother, an organ donor, gave the gift of life to several recipients when he died in a car accident at age 23. The doctors at Hartford hospital were wonderful.. I'd like to send the link for this story to my parents but can't seem to find it on the website. Any advice? Thank you.

8:38

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Tracey, go to www.wfsb.com, click on the health tab, click on "Advancing Medicine" and the entire show should be up within the hour.

8:39

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Tracey, I'm so sorry about your brother. What a wonderful gift that he gave to others.

8:40

Comment From Dave

Regarding the thought that if you sign up to be a donor medical teams will not do their best to save the potential donor....remember 1 thing...your more likely to need a transplant than to ever become a donor....I'm glad I signed up to be a donor when I was healthy....I also donated blood and got my 10 gallon pin....I can honestly say I feel great about having been able to be a donor

8:41

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, Dave.

8:43

Comment From Lindsey

I am signing up to be a donor. The two things that got me: 1) hearing the doctor say what she did about the myth that everyone seems to think (that they don't try to save organ donors)... that it's untrue, and 2) Colby saying that if you are willing to accept a donor organ, you should be willing to donate an organ. I'm signing up now! I've had colon cancer (I was in the digestive disorder show in Dec 2011), but I am considered cured... and even so, I am sure someone could use my heart when I'm done with it (or whatever other part of me) :) Fantastic show... good work as usual... thank you all !

8:45

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks, Lindsey! Two really great points...Too often, we see that people just don't think about donation--so they don't join the Donor Registry. It is so important to get the right information!

8:48

LifeChoice Donor Services:

And great for you for beating colon cancer, Lindsey! Stay healthy!

8:48

Comment From Guest

How come not more info or shows are out there regarding organ donations and the recipients.

8:49

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Good question! We are always looking for opportunities to help people understand the Donor Registry and why it's so important to sign up. Thanks to WFSB for doing such great work on getting the word out!

8:51

Comment From Guest

Perhaps one less McDonald commercial and some organ transplant commercials

8:52

LifeChoice Donor Services:

It's so important to get the info out there...18 people die each day waiting for an organ transplant. That just shouldn't happen.

8:54

Comment From Guest

What is the average wait time for a O- heart?

8:56

LifeChoice Donor Services:

I think Dr. Wencker said it's about a 3 month wait on the show. The transplant program would know that answer best--I'm sure it varies based on whether or not someone is waiting in the hospital and the patient's condition.

8:57

LifeChoice Donor Services:

I'm signing off in 5 minutes--any last minute questions?

8:58

LifeChoice Donor Services:

All of you that watched the show--share the message with your friends and family. 80% of people think organ and tissue donation is the right thing to do, but 57% of people don't know the proper steps to sign up...it's easy! Visit www.DonateLifeNewEngland.org.

8:59

Comment From Dave

Thanks to all those donors and their families, medical personel, lifechoice volunteers and everyone involved in the process.

9:00

Comment From Lindsey

This should be aired again.... at a time that many people will watch. WFSB... SHOW IT AGAIN!!!! (and all of the other ones too... they are all needed to reach people) Hartford Hospital is doing such a good thing with all of these episodes. Make them more available! (the WFSB, & the HH, website could do a better job of linking things and really taking advantage of these wonderful shows that have taken tons of work)

9:02

LifeChoice Donor Services:

I think it is planned to air again on 10/7 at 5am (but there won't be a chat or call in). Also check it out online and share it!

9:02

LifeChoice Donor Services:

Thanks for all of your great comments!
