Mediator helps avoid school bus strike in Westport

A school bus company and the drivers' union have agreed to a "cooling off" period and avoid a strike in Westport.
Officials said that Dattco, a New Britain-based bus company, and United Food and Commercial Workers Local 371 agreed Sunday night to a request by a federal mediator to step back from the dispute that could have resulted in a strike.
School officials had warned parents that drivers rejected a proposed settlement with management and would walk off the job Monday morning.
Cliff Gibson, chief operating officer of Dattco, said a federal mediator tried to help resolve the impasse.

Gibson says the bus company offered to temporarily extend the terms of the current contract to avoid an interruption of service.
