Family mourns twin's death as sister recovers from crash

Johnna Feugate loved dressing up as a cowgirl and was full of energy.

She especially loved playing outdoors with her friends and sisters. She and twin sister Christina should have been celebrating their 10th birthday on Monday.

Because Monday was their birthday, the family postponed until Tuesday a trip to Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home to plan Johnna's final celebration. Johnna died Friday from injuries suffered a week earlier.

Johnna and Christina were riding their bike the afternoon of Sept. 21 when they apparently didn't stop for a stop sign and crashed into an SUV. Both were rushed via medical helicopter to Children's Mercy in Kansas City.

Christina suffered debilitating injuries, but is on the road to recovery.

Funeral home director Chad Wilson said it was heartbreaking to see a sobbing Christina this week come to the funeral home in a wheelchair and full body cast to look at a mirror image of herself in the casket.

Wilson said the funeral home staff is doing their best to support the family during such an incredibly difficult time.

"It pulls at our heart strings," he said. "It could be any of our children or grandchildren."

Many people have come together to help the family. Firefighters helped install a wooden ramp at the home for Christina to use.

A fund has been set up to pay for the funeral costs and the girls' massive medical expenses. Donations may be made to the Feugate fund, care of the funeral home, 305 N. Pearl St., Paola, KS 66071.

Neighbors also remain devastated by the tragedy. Speed monitors have been put in place and the small town is talking about safety improvements. A reduction of speed limits in the area and construction of sidewalks are being talked about.

Visitation is set for Thursday night and Johnna's final homecoming celebration will be Friday morning, just two weeks after the crash.

In addition to Christina, Johnna is survived by her parents, Henry and Sonya Feugate, and sisters Brittany and Dawn.
