Men pretending to be MDC workers enter West Hartford home
By WFSB Staff
WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
West Hartford officials are issuing a warning to residents to be on the lookout for men pretending to be workers from the Metropolitan District Commission.
MDC officials said a man in his 20s claiming to be from the water company went into a home on Newington Road and told the homeowner he was there to check the water meter in the basement. Soon after, the suspect got a phone call and left the residence.
When the elderly woman's husband returned home, he noticed that money missing from a hidden location.
"It's horrible," said Sara Wolf of West Hartford. "When people take advantage of older people, it's really sad."
This comes after a similar incident in Newington on Tuesday, when two men told an elderly couple they were from MDC and needed to test their water, went through the home and even took their phone away so they couldn't call for help.
"People should call their elderly parents and neighbors," Wolf said.
West Hartford police could not say if the two cases were connected at this time. Police in West Hartford believe that there may have been two suspects involved in Wednesday's incident.
MDC officials want to remind people to ask for worker identification before letting anyone into a home. And residents should only open their doors to workers only if they have scheduled an appointment, called for service or an emergency such as a water main break.
Recently released photos of employees uniforms give homeowners a better idea what workers are required to wear if they show up at someone's house. According to the MDC, all field employees wear clothing and drive vehicles clearly marked with the MDC logo.
MDC employees must provide homeowners with proper credentials before entering a residence.
If a homeowner does not feel comfortable allowing an employee into their home, they are urged to call the MDC 24 hours a day, seven days a week at 860-278-7850 ext 3600.
