New Haven man accused of hitting brother with monkey wrench

New Haven police said a city man was arrested Wednesday night after allegedly beating his brother with a monkey wrench when he was informed a woman would be sleeping at their home.

According to police, Elijah White, 58, of 98 Sherman Ave. got into a fight with his brother, Sherman, around 1:30 a.m. Sherman White said he told his mother that Elijah was planning on having a woman spend the night.

Elijah White was upset about the comment and grabbed a monkey wrench, which he hit Sherman with several times while threatening his life, police said. Sherman White tired to block his brother's swings, but his dentures were knocked out of his mouth. He also suffered a contusion to his left cheek and a lacerated finger.

Police said that Elijah White admitted to the fight, but claimed that Sherman started it. He told police that he asked Sherman to listen for his friend because he was taking out his hearing aids. However, he got mad at Sherman because when he woke up, there were several missed phone calls from his lady friend.

Elijah White tried to confront Sherman about the incident and when he did, Sherman took out his dentures and prepared to fight.

Police seized the monkey wrench from the scene.

Elijah White was charged with second-degree assault and second-degree reckless endangerment. Sherman White was charged with breach of peace and released on a promise to appear in court.
