HAMDEN, CT (WFSB) -

A Hamden owner of two rottweilers was issued an infraction after her dogs attacked a 47-year-old woman and seriously injured her Wednesday night.

Around 6 p.m., Cynthia Reed was in her second-floor apartment on 440 Shelton Ave. when she heard the screams of her granddaughter and rushed outside. Two rottweilers escaped from their home on Edwards Street and were attacking the 6-year-old girl, police said.

Neighbor Monique Jones saw the dog attack and grabbed the girl without either of them getting hurt, police said. Jones ran into her house with the girl.

When Reed got outside, she was attacked by the dogs, police said.

"They could have killed her," neighbor Ranaisha Cranford previously told Eyewitness News.

As she was being dragged and bitten by the rottweilers, Kenneth Lewis and Curtis Watkins came outside with baseball bats. The two men hit the dogs repeatedly with the bats until they released Reed.

"It should be noted the numerous residents played a heroic role in coming to the aid of Cynthia Reed," said police Capt. Ronald Smith in a release Friday.

Reed suffered wounds to the head and back and was taken to the Hospital of Saint Raphael with serious injuries, police said.

The owner of the rottweilers, Kim Miller, was charged with four counts of animal nuisance and two counts of allowing a dog to roam. She told police the dogs pushed open the gate at her house while she was trying to take out the garbage.

"The dogs allegedly hit a latch on a gate and escaped," Smith said during a press conference Friday evening.

One dog was taken to New Haven Central Veterinary Hospital and the other was impounded at the North Haven Animal Shelter. Hamden Animal Control is investigating the incident and it is unclear what will happen to the animals.
