United States Sen. Richard Blumenthal will join Mayor John DeStefano and representatives from other police departments on a tour of a firing range to press the need for a new facility.
Officials said the city is seeking federal funding for a new indoor firing range. The existing New Haven firing range is located within a residential neighborhood and is within earshot of four local schools.
Firing ranges are sparse in the Northeast, officials said, and it's often used by numerous partner agencies including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, the Secret Service, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the U.S. Marshals Service, the Internal Revenue Service and the Coast Guard.
City officials said the new facility would cost around $6.5 million.
