A sex offender who locked himself inside a Wendy's restaurant bathroom with a 10-year-old boy and attacked him pleaded guilty in a Portland courtroom Wednesday.
Adam Brown, 49, received a 33-year sentence for the crimes he committed on July 1. Brown forced the child into the bathroom of a Wendy's restaurant at Northeast Sandy Boulevard and 29th Avenue on a weekend afternoon.
He stabbed the boy multiple times as the child fought back, police said. Eventually, with the boy's father trying to break down the door, the child emerged from the bathroom naked and bloody, according to court documents.
Other customers then held the bathroom door shut until police arrived in hopes of preventing Brown from escaping. Police arrested Brown after a two-hour standoff.
The injured boy was taken to the hospital and had to undergo surgery.
In a 1993 case, allegations surfaced that Brown, who has HIV, tried to kill children by using sex to infect them with the virus. When Brown was sentenced, none of the children had tested positive for HIV. The charges would have been more severe if they had.
The victim's family did not attend the sentencing hearing Wednesday, but in a statement read in the courtroom they described Brown as a "sick, evil, twisted human being." It said:
"I speak for all parents when I say you do not deserve to be alive. The fact that you're going to prison for a very long time, will never justify the actions you've taken. The real justice comes when you are judged by God to burn in hell. I hope when that time comes you will remember our son and all the past victims you've wounded mentally and physically. And know this, their wounds are healing yours will not. You have brought pain and sadness to my family. The horror that our son had to go through will always be in the depths of his mind; but broken is something he will never be. His resilience and strength to fight against the ignorance of men, I mean monsters like you, reassures him that this is only temporary. To know you're a parent yourself is extremely disturbing. How do you bring children into this world and then turn around and assault them? You're a sick, evil twisted human being and you deserve the punishment coming to you."
