The Norwalk Police Department said a woman from Greenwich was shot in the Stop & Shop on Connecticut Avenue parking lot Wednesday afternoon.
A 50-year-old woman was walking to her car when a man approached her and tried to rob her, police said. One shot was fired and the woman was hit in the stomach with a bullet, police said.
She has been taken to an area hospital, where she has been sent into surgery.
The suspect was described by police as a light-skinned black man in his 20s to 30s and is about 6" tall. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jeans and black sneakers with white soles at the time of robbery.
Police believe he fled the scene on foot.
The woman, who is not being identified at this time, was holding a little dog at the time of the shooting. Her dog is fine and was uninjured.
Shoppers were shocked to hear about the shooting.
"You can't even shop in peace now," said Joyce Middleton. "You can't walk down the street. You have to be careful for yourself and your family. It's getting really, really bad."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Norwalk Police Department at 203-854-3011. All calls will be kept confidential.
