A man living near Sherwood used a pickaxe to try and stop two burglars he interrupted as they were stealing from his home.
It happened near the 24000 block of Morgan Lane about 1:15 p.m. on Wednesday.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office said the victim used the pickaxe to slash the rear tire on the suspects' car as they drove away.
"It was the first thing I found that I could use to protect myself," said Chris Mollahan of his antique pickaxe from the 1920s, which originally belonged to his wife's grandfather.
"My goal was to make sure they weren't going to get away," he told Fox 12.
Mollahan managed to puncture a rear tire and broke the hubcap off a front tire. However, the suspects still managed to drive off despite the damage.
"At that point in time, I started running down the driveway with the pickaxe in my hand, and I threw it at their car," said Mollahan.
The suspects still managed to get away but left the stolen loot behind, including a portable DVD player and two pillowcases filled with jewelry, valuables and silver.
Clackamas County sheriff's deputies searched the area for the suspects but did not find them.
A few hours later, someone called 911 to report two suspicious men in the 12000 block of Westfall Road in Sherwood.
The homeowner told dispatch the men offered him $100 for a ride into town.
Deputies said the description of those men matched the suspects in the earlier burglary, and an abandoned car found nearby with a flat tire also matched. That car was found to be stolen.
The suspects are described as two Hispanic men in their 20s wearing dark-colored clothing.
The Clackamas County Sheriff's Office is seeking tips and information to help track the suspects down.
Anyone with information that can help is encouraged to call the office's confidential tip line at 503-723-4949.
