MIDDLEBURY, CT (WFSB) -
Middlebury police officers have taken two suspects into custody and seized a van that they believe was used in a home invasion on Yale Avenue on Thursday afternoon.
According to police, two suspects broke into the house which was occupied by a 14-year-old boy and 12-year-old girl around 4:30 p.m. Police said the two children were unharmed and the thieves made off with about $19 in cash, assorted jewelry, a CD player and what is believed to be a pellet gun, police said.
"They were surprised," said Lt. Richard Wildman. "The thieves told them they were working on a house down the street and left."
Michael McCurrey, 32, and Jennifer Labbe both of Waterbury were arrested. Both were charged with home invasion, second-degree conspiracy to commit burglary and conspiracy to commit sixth-degree larceny as well as two counts of risk of injury to a minor.
McCurrey, who was on parole, is being held on a $750,000 bond while Labbe has a $500,000 bond. Both are expected to appear in Superior Court in Waterbury on Monday morning.
Their van was seized for evidence and had stolen plates on it, police said. Officers believe one of the suspects took it from a company called Power Wash. Police believe the suspect peeled off the company's label.
The vehicle was spotted by a Naugatuck firefighter that noticed it driving erratically.
Police are also looking to see if there is a link between the suspects and the suspicious activity that occurred earlier today in Easton and home break-ins Newtown.
In Easton, a man attempted to enter a home on Morning Glory Drive around 9:30 a.m. He told the resident that he was from the Southern Connecticut Gas Company and was there to check the gas.
However, the resident did not have gas and asked the man to show him identification. The man got into a white van, which was similar to the one used in Middlebury, and drove off.
The crimes are believed to be random, police said.
"I think it was a random act, totally random," Wildman said.
Police and residents are unclear why the home or neighborhood were targeted.
"We have like three or four cops that live here so I'm really surprised that somebody would try to do this here," said neighbor Cam Sondio. "It's really kind of shocking here."
Anyone who may have any information is asked to call Middlebury police at 203-577-4028.
