MILFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Following a shooting at a Norwalk Stop & Shop, officials for the grocery store chain are assuring customers that they are safe to visit their facilities.
Last week, a 50-year-old woman was shot in the stomach while getting into her car after shopping at a Stop & Shop in Norwalk, according to police.
The shooting is believed to be random and police continue to search for the suspects.
"You have to just be aware of your surroundings," said Lu Follini, who was shopping at the Milford Stop & Shop Monday. "That's all. And just watch where you go and pray you're safe all the time."
According to Stop & Shop officials, they have decided to not change any security practices at any of its stores.
"There is no need to be concerned when parking at Stop & Shop," officials from Stop & Shop said in a statement Monday. "We have excellent lighting and cameras in all of our parking lots."
Officials told Eyewitness News that anytime a customer feels unsafe, they can ask for an escort to their vehicle.
The shooting on Oct. 10 was not the first time customers have been targeted outside of a Stop & Shop.
According to police, an 82-year-old woman had returned to her Pine Lane home in Wethersfield after shopping at the Stop & Shop in Rocky Hill on the morning of June 22. As she was getting out of her vehicle, the woman was robbed in her garage at gunpoint by Eugene Edwards, 50, police said.
Police believe Edwards followed the woman home from the Stop & Shop. Edwards was arrested on Sept. 21 and police are trying to determine if he followed other elderly women home from surrounding area grocery stores.
"It just brings to the forefront that we should be careful all the time, even at the store we come to all the time," said Colleen Glinski of Milford
