Hartford firefighters wear pink for breast cancer awareness

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Firefighters and staff at the Hartford Fire Department will be wearing pink T-shirts during the month of October in support of Breast Cancer awareness.

"By this effort, the city of Hartford, the many men and women who sacrifice on behalf of our residents, the mayor and I hope to bring about a heightened level of awareness, promote early detection and continue giving back to a community that has given each of us so much," said Hartford Fire Chief Edward Casares Jr.

The disease has been known to affect many firefighters' lives, Casares said.

"Occasionally, the disease strikes one of our own," he said. "Firefighters are four times more susceptible to several forms of cancer due to various exposures they face."

The Hartford Fire Department will be selling the 2012 Pink Station T-shirt and hat for $20 apiece with all the proceeds going to the Making Strides Foundation.

Firefighters will also be running in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer 5K/Walk at Bushnell Park on Oct. 21.
