Crash in Middletown causes delays on I-91

MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Traffic is moving again in Middletown after an overturned tractor-trailer closed Interstate 91 northbound between exits 18 and 20.

The right and center lanes were closed for about six hours while the investigation was being conducted by state police. The closure of the lanes closed a traffic nightmare.

"We were able to keep the left lane open to keep traffic flowing as best we can," said Sgt. Christopher McWilliams.

A Hyundai Sedan was entering I-91 North from exit 68NE around 4:30 a.m. when the vehicle lost control and the tractor-trailer swerved to avoid a collision, which caused a shift in the cargo, causing the tractor-trailer to overturn.

The tractor-trailer was carrying plastic bottles, and there is no threat to the environment.

Police tell Eyewitness News that there are no injuries.

The highway was fully shutdown at some point this morning to clear the crash. Special equipment was used to inflate air bags underneath the truck to get it back on its right side.
