Murphy holds slight lead over McMahon in CT Senate race

Posted: Updated:

A new poll conducted by University of Connecticut and Hartford Courant shows Democratic U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy with a slight lead over Republican Linda McMahon.

The survey shows that 44 percent of likely voters support Murphy, compared to 38 percent who would back McMahon. According to the poll, 17 percent are still undecided.

The poll, which has a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, was released Thursday and was conducted with 574 likely voters.

Both candidates released statements on the poll Thursday.

McMahon's campaign believes the poll is flawed with over-sampled Democrats and under sampled Independents.

"These results are extremely suspect," McMahon's campaign statement said. "Even the poll director herself is hedging on the veracity of the results by saying it is not necessarily a 6-point lead."

"Linda McMahon's campaign is now so desperate to convince people this isn't slipping away that they are more focused on attacking polls than talking about issues," Murphy's campaign statement said.

McMahon and Murphy are vying for the right to succeed Joe Lieberman in the U.S. Senate.

Connecticut has not had a Republican senator in more than 30 years.

The fourth debate is scheduled for Thursday at 4 p.m. at the Hilton Hotel in Hartford.

Previous debates have been held at Eyewitness News in Rocky Hill, New London and the University of Connecticut. The topics covered have ranged from Social Security to the economy to foreign policy.

In fact, the poll shows the debates are helping people make up their minds in this close race.
