Campaign signs missing in Oxford

OXFORD, CT (WFSB) -

The head of the Oxford Democratic Town Committee said her party's signs were taken down over the past two weeks and now, the Connecticut State Police are investigating the incident.

On Route 188 in Oxford, more than 50 political signs for President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Rep. Chris Murphy, D-5th District and Rep. Jim Himes, D-4th District were stolen, according to Oxford Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman Ann Kane. Now, mostly Republican signs remain.

The incident has since been reported to state police. It is a crime to steal campaign signs, according to police.

Kane is not blaming the Republicans for the sign stealing. She told Eyewitness News that Republicans outnumber Democrats in Oxford. Although, the largest voting block in town is Independents.

"Well, I'm surprised and disappointed because it is so mean-spirited," Kane said. "The intolerance is just frightening."

Chairman for Oxford Republican Town Committee David Stocker told Eyewitness News that his group had nothing to do with the missing signs.

"Signs have been stolen every election year, including Republican signs," he said in a statement to Eyewitness News Friday.

Both town committees hope the sign stealing stops.
