GLENDALE, AZ (CBS5) -
It was a public memorial that grew over the past year in Glendale, but the stuffed animals and candles for missing 5-year-old Jhessye Shockley have now been removed from the intersection of 45th Avenue and Glendale.
City officials said the items were collected by their city employees Wednesday over concerns of blight at the spot. The items are being stored by police until Jhessye's family can pick them up.
"This is a city right of way, and as such will be treated as other city right of ways from this point forward," city spokeswoman Julie Frisoni said.
Jhessye's mother, Jerice Hunter, has been charged with her murder even though the girl's body has never been found.
