Cities, towns say storm communication has improved since last year

WEST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
Officials in cities and towns are making preparations to make sure there is constant communication, even if the power goes out.
In Farmington, utility crews have made some repairs already to be prepared for the possibility of Hurricane Sandy affecting Connecticut.
Officials are trying to make sure residents throughout Connecticut are prepared and aware of the storm.
"Most importantly, if you have elderly friends or neighbors who cannot get out of their house, check in on them," said West Hartford Mayor Scott Slifka.
During Hurricane Irene, towns were unable to reach people with updates and information on where shelters were.
Officials are urging residents to sign up on a special website known as CTAlert.com. People can register using their cell phone numbers, so towns and cities can contact them during the storm or a general emergency.
"It's way too early to say it's going to hit us head-on, but we learned from last year - never assume," said Thomas Cooke, director of administrative services for Simsbury.
However, some residents don't believe meteorologists.
"But the storm is going to miss us," said Bonnie Dayton of Glastonbury. "I just refuse to think it's going to hit us."
