Connecticut schools have plans in place for Sandy

EAST HAMPTON, CT (WFSB) -

If Hurricane Sandy sweeps across Connecticut, school officials said they will be ready.

However, if schools shut down, many parents and caretakers will be scrambling for a backup plan.

"I would have to find a babysitter and all that fun stuff," said Tiffany Bond of East Hampton.

Many superintendents of school sat in emergency meetings with town officials Friday to spell out possible plans for the school systems in case of severe weather.

The East Hampton school system has already put in place an "Alert Now" calling system to keep parents informed and all the buildings are secure.

"All generators topped off and shouldn't be an issue," said Superintendent of Schools Rick Klotzbier.

The idea of closing schools on Monday and Tuesday was considered by school officials.

"I'm not too concerned. It is what it is, they don't know the path right now," said Kim Kiernan of East Hampton. "It's weather, we're in New England. It could completely change its path and get nothing or could hit directly and school could be canceled for two weeks."

Kiernan said she will not have to deal with child care issues.

"As a parent you get concerned, you're gunna be outta school for a week and it's impact for the end of the year," she said. "Because last year school was so much longer and summer felt so much shorter."

In Glastonbury, schools have already emailed out storm forecasts to parents to let them know that they are closely monitoring the storm.

Many school officials said they will likely meet again this weekend to update the parents and caregivers before Monday.
