About 52,000 United Illuminating customers lost power Monday night after three substations in Bridgeport were de-energized.
Earlier on Monday, a notice was released by the Bridgeport mayor's office warning more than 35,000 residents that they would lose power at noon because the flooding, but thankfully that did not occur. All 35,000 of these customers will now be effected by the substations being de-energized.
But, UI officials warned, that story could change as more flooding is predicted for Monday night.
Customers in several Fairfield County towns including Stratford, Trumbull, Shelton and Fairfield will be impacted by the substations being de-energized.
According to UI officials, substations could be back on Tuesday morning, depending on the damage.
"We've made clear to the utility companies something they already know: Everyone is watching to see how they perform," Gov. Dannel Malloy said.
UI officials are hoping not to have perform similar actions with other substations.
"De-energizing before they potentially flood will make the restoration efforts in that area go more smoothly and quickly," Malloy said.
"They have to do this because if the substations flood while they're energized, the results could be catastrophic."
