Emergency officials in Old Saybrook said an elderly man was rescued from rising floodwater Monday night.
Fire officials said the Old Saybrook Fire Department received a call around 7:30 p.m. about a utility pole fire.
When fire crews arrived, the fire was out, but they were greeted by a neighbor who mentioned she had seen an elderly man walking in the tidal flood waters of the Connecticut River near his home.
Firefighter Bruce Watford put on a life jacket and had a lifeline secured when he began to wade across the waist-deep parking lot, forced entry into the home and searched the second floor apartment for the man.
He was brought to a local hospital for treatment.
