Fairfield was one of many towns to feel the effects of Sandy and for many of its residents and officials an assessment of the total damage could take days to complete.
Officials in Fairfield said they are still days away from getting to some of the most damaged areas in town. At least one home was seen floating in the Fairfield Beach Road area and about five more in the area were destroyed.
Waves caused by Sandy were ruthless, beat up the beach and severely damaged foundations of homes.
Not only waterfront homes were damaged. More than five blocks away from the beach, homes in Fairfield were still surrounded by water Tuesday morning.
Kayaks were still the only mode of transportation in and out of some areas of Fairfield. Police used military vehicles and received help from the National Guard to access certain areas.
"The water was so fast. I woke up, it was dry in the middle of night," said Suzanne Atkins, of Fairfield. "And it was churning up and it was nerve-wracking."
A massive amount of trees are down throughout Fairfield.
Also at the height of the storm, the entire town was without power, including the police department. The restoration of power isn't expected to start until Wednesday.
