EAST HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

An East Hartford police officer was placed on administrative leave Friday afternoon after he was charged with possession of child pornography earlier in the week.

Andrew W. Nielsen, 48, was arrested Thursday and charged with receipt of child pornography.

According to the Connecticut's United States Attorney's office, Nielsen is accused of having several DVDs containing child pornography from a foreign company shipped to his South Windsor home from November 2010 to April 2011.

The DVDs showed images and videos of child pornography.

The South Windsor Police Department along with United States Postal Inspection Service is conducting an investigation into Nielsen.

On Friday, East Hartford Police Chief Mark J. Sirois has started an internal affairs investigation into the allegations and the arrest of Nielsen.

On Thursday, Nielsen was released on bond under electronic monitoring by the United States Probation Office, according to the Connecticut's United States Attorney's office. He could face a minimum of five years in prison with a maximum of 20 years.
