Winter Storm Ari gives drivers headaches

HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Winter Storm Ari gave drivers headaches and hassles as the storm ramped up during the evening commute Wednesday and stopped before the morning rush on Thursday.

The storm has since moved on, and many have been digging out ever since, but Thursday morning proved to be quite tricky for drivers.

"They were saying we were only going to get an inch or so and we ended up with 10 inches," said Thomas Quigley of Quigley Landscaping.

The main highways seemed to be clear, just wet during the morning commute, but most were still slick and in many instances, side roads people needed to travel on to get to the interstates were still a mess.

Local town crews spent the morning clearing out neighborhoods after Ari dumped more than a foot of snow in some locations.

In addition to all the municipal and state plows out salting and sanding the roads, Ari kept private contractors, landscapers and anyone else with a snow plow busy Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

"I thought we were getting an inch," said Billy Souza, of Meriden. "I think we got close to a foot."

But for some, a foot of snow means a handful of green.

Awake since about 3 a.m.,  Quigley has about 43 driveways and one business to dig out.

Tough and tiring work for sure, but after a mild winter in terms of snowfall last year, he said he'll gladly take this in early November.

"Last year was tough," said Quigley, who has been plowing for three years. "Only had one good snowstorm. The rest were too little, so this is nice."

Winter Storm Ari kept anyone with a snow plow busy Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

"I have a friend in Cheshire, helped him plow out, now I've got to go up to North Farm's road," Souza said. "When you've got a lot of snow plow, you've got a lot of friends."
