Jasmine Bryant, 10, suffered serious injuries in the Middletown crash and was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital.
MIDDLETOWN, CT (WFSB) -
Connecticut State Police are investigating a crash that killed a 10-year-old girl on Interstate 91 in Middletown on Sunday afternoon.
Just after 4:30 p.m., state police responded to reports that a vehicle traveling north in the left lane suddenly lost control and rolled over several times.
State police said the driver, Keshia Bryant, 29, of New Haven, suffered serious injuries in the crash and was brought to Hartford Hospital to be treated.
Troopers said there were two children in the car and they were both ejected from the vehicle as it rolled over.
Jazmine Bryant, 10, of West Haven suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at Hartford Hospital.
"She was my baby," said Kizzie Bryant, who is Jazmine's mother. "She was my world, everybody basically loved her."
The second child, 5-year-old Aniya Santos, also suffered serious injuries and was brought to a local hospital and is expected to recover. Aniya is the cousin of Jazmine.
Police are investigating whether the children were properly fastened in the car.
According to her mother, Jazmine was supposed to be celebrating her 11th birthday in a couple of weeks.
"We were already planning her birthday," she said. "It's just really sad."
Grief counselors were provided at Elm City College Preparatory Middle School on Monday morning where Jazmine was a fifth-grade student.
"Jazmine was filled with a love of learning and had a wonderful bounce in her step as she came to school each morning," said Elm City College Preparatory Middle School Principal Rebecca Good. "Jazmine will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and condolences are with her family during this difficult time."
People who knew Jazmine were also taken back by the news of her death.
"A child loss is always deep but as you as she is," said Keshia Bryant's neighbor Ellen Sherman. "She's going to be missed."
Anyone who may have seen the crash is asked to call the New Haven Police Department at 203-946-6304 or 203-946-6316.
