Landlord fees create massive protest in New Britain

Posted: Updated:
NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -

Landlords and tenants descended on New Britain City Hall Wednesday night with an angry message to the mayor about a new law that will charge absentee landlords $150 for each unit.

And despite hundreds of people showing up at City Hall, the city is holding its ground.

The angry landlords and tenants flooded City Hall and even blocked the road out in front to protest the fine, which they said is nothing more than a new tax.

"It will make us cut back and it will probably make us move out, too," said Normarie Reyes. "It will be too much for us."

But some renters are supportive of the plan, feeling it will make certain landlords, those with blighted properties, more accountable.

The city said the ordinance will bring in $1 million a year, but landlords aren't backing down.

They filed a lawsuit and have a clear message for the mayor.

"If he doesn't repeal this law, we will be here in November and he's a one-term mayor. He's done," said Sam Zherka, an absentee landlord.

The city ordinance goes into effect in February when the city hopes to collect.
