After watching a WFSB story on disabled veteran, a local high school decided to help and donated thousands of dollars to help his recovery.
In May 2011, Capt. Greg Galeazzi, 25, and his squad were checking on reports of unstable explosives in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan.
When a single explosion was detonated directly beneath him, it led to both legs being amputated and his right arm being severely injured.
Once he was stabilized, Galeazzi was brought to the Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antino, TX, which is a long-term rehabilitation facility.
While at the Brooke Army Medical Center, he is learning to walk with prosthetics, which he received in August.
After hearing about Galeazzi's story on WFSB, the students at Glastonbury High School decided they wanted to help and setup a fundraiser.
During Veteran's Day, students and faculty collected money to post a yellow ribbon in the school to show their support for Galeazzi. The fundraiser raised $8,000. The school also received a check from man, who wishes to remain anonymous, for $6,000.
Galeazzi is hoping to be transferred out of Brooke Army Medical Center and sent to the Walter Reed in Washington, D.C. to be closer to his girlfriend. However to accomplish that, his arm needs to be fully rehabbed.
"The outcome of that one unlucky day in Afghanistan," Galeazzi previously told Eyewitness News. "I don't think that's offset what I've benefited from my own character development, the mental confidence and strength to get through anything."
