NEW BRITAIN, CT (WFSB) -
A man accused of setting a home on fire because he wanted to live there but was denied is headed to court.
The fire broke out at the home on Winthrop Street over the weekend.
Police said after being told he couldn't live in the home, 40-year-old John Dipietro now finds himself in the New Britain lockup.
According to police, Dipietro set the vacant home on fire early Saturday morning.
Pamela Orr has lived in the neighborhood for years.
"My 9-year-old grandson woke up woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom. He saw the fire I guess through the window in the living room. He woke up his mom and dad and said mom, there's a big fire next door," she said.
The fire took hours to get under control, and police said Dipietro, who lived next door, admitted to setting the fire.
He's now being charged with arson and burglary.
"It's a very strange, bizarre situation," Orr said.
Dipietro is currently being held on $250,000 bond.
