50 tenants displaced by Hartford apartment fire

Hartford fire officials confirmed that 50 people have been displaced by a fast-moving fire at an apartment complex on Allen Place Monday night.

No one was hurt or trapped during the fire, officials said.

The American Red Cross is assisting 16 adults along with three children who were displaced. In total, 11 families are being provided with emergency housing, food and clothing.

The fire is believed to have started in a unit on the third floor of the building. Upon arrival, flames could be seen shooting out a window on that floor.

However, firefighters were able to knock the fire down quickly.

"The first thing was get the baby downstairs, everything happened so quick after that," said Carl Randolph of Hartford. "As we were running out the halls, we could see the smoke billowing up."

Randolph's girlfriend had just put their 2-month-old son down to bed when he said he heard banging and yelling. It turns out, there was a fire in the apartment right next door.

"Timing is everything I guess, but we'll weather the storm," he told Eyewitness News. "We'll make it happen."

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
