A fatal crash involving a tractor-trailer as well as multiple other cars closed Interstate 84 in Middlebury at Exit 16 for several hours and caused a traffic jam on both sides of the highway.
Department of Transportation spokesman Kevin Nursick said the crash was not a typical incident and was accident that only occurs every few years.
"This is one of the very bad ones," Nursick said.
State police said one person has died in the crash; however, police are not releasing the victim's name until further notification of kin.
Multiple vehicle were torn to pieces, Nursick added.
The backup stretched on for about 19 miles at one point, and as of 11 p.m., the traffic was jammed up for just shy of 10 miles, Nursick said.
All eastbound lanes of I-84 were closed for hours starting at 4:30 p.m. because of a crash, according to state police.
There was no accident reported westbound; however, there was a large backup to about Interstate 691 with holiday travelers, rush hour traffic and rubberneckers.
State officials used Twitter feed and e-traffic alerts to warn people. New York officials helped to warn folks as well.
