The opening night of Winterfest in Hartford is Friday.
The event, which starts at 5:15 p.m., features a skating show, festive procession, appearance by the governor and a carol sing.
In 2011, about 50,000 people attended winter festivities and enjoyed free skating, according to event organizers.
The public is allowed to skate from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
The Bushnell Park Carousel will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Winterfest also features horse and carriage rides, fresh cut trees and wreaths, with proceeds benefiting the Channel 3 Kids Camp and bundles of firewood to benefit programs for homeless men.
